This tutorial covers the basics for creating new posts on your website using the WordPress Classic Editor and the Themify Builder. (See the tutorial for the Block Editor here.)

An Overview

Let’s start with a snapshot of the four areas you’ll need to complete to create a new post.

Get the Party Started

Okay, how do you get started?

Logged into your WordPress dashboard, go to Posts → Add New.

You could also click Posts in the sidebar. This will open your Posts dashboard showing you a list of all your posts.

In this case, click the Add New button.

Let’s create some magic in four phases…

(1) Add a Post Title

This is by no means a difficult step but it’s important to give a little thought to what amounts to the ‘headline’ piece of your post.

The Post Title should be no longer than 70 characters. Ideally, it should be clear and compelling.

The title will also form part of the post’s permalink (web page URL). This will happen automatically.

Although the Post Title is the first step of the process, it is good practice to review the Post Title as the final step before publishing the post to ensure it reflects the content well.

(2) Select a Category

This is the easiest step. Simply choose a pre-selected category or create a new one.

That said, your posts are organised via these Categories. It’s best to think through 4-8 categories around which you’ll group all your content. It’s also best to keep to one-word categories such as Articles, News, Events, Promotions and the like.

If you forget to add a category, the default “uncategorized” option will be automatically selected. Don’t panic. If you forget to select the category, you can always change it later.

(3) Upload a Featured Image

The featured image should capture the gist of your post. It’s very important to optimise the image correctly. Why? An image that’s too large or oversized will slow the page’s loading speed. Consistently uploading images that are too large and ‘heavy’ will affect the website’s overall performance.

Optimise your featured image to these specs:

Image Dimensions: 1200px wide by 800px high

File Size: Between 200KB and 400KB

Yes, avoid uploading an image onto the website straight from your camera or mobile phone. These images tend to be massive.

Also, it’s very important to only use images you own or that are copyright-free. Severe penalties have been issued against websites for copyright infringement.

When you have your image prepared on your computer, upload it via Media Library by clicking the “Set featured image” button.

(4) Add your content via the Themify Builder

You can add your copy (text context) directly into the WordPress Visual Editor. This is certainly the easiest and quickest way to go. And for many, it’s more than sufficient especially if you just plan to add text to the editor.

However, it is limited in terms of what customisations are available to you, especially in terms of layout and positioning in-content images.

For this reason, we’ve included the Themify Builder on your website so that you can enjoy more customisation options without needing to learn code. Yay!

The sky’s just about the limit but we’ll keep it very simple in this tutorial.

Okay, to add content to your post using the Themify Builder, simply click on the green + button to access a large range of builder modules. You’ll use these modules as the “bricks” to build your content.

A pop-out will display in the left side bar. Simply select the module you want (1) and drag it into the Builder row (2). In most cases, you’ll simply need the Text Module.

The Text Module will pop-up and you can either write your content straight into the editor or copy-paste your content into it.

Remove the placeholder “Text content” and add your content.

When you’re done, click the orange DONE button to close the module and then click the orange SAVE button to save the Builder content.

Bringing It Home

Once you’ve added your content, it’s time to preview your masterpiece.

1 = First click “Save Draft” and then the “Preview” button to view your page.

2 = Normally you’ll publish the page immediately but you can also schedule the post for a different date.

3 = When you’re happy, click “Publish” to push the content ‘live’.

Front-end Editing

Up to this point, we’ve done everything from the back-end. With the Themify Builder, you can also create and edit content on the front-end. This means you’ll see your changes in real time.

Open the web page on the front-end and click the “Turn On Builder” in the top bar…

This will open the Themify Builder on the front-end where you can work your magic.

Front-end editing is certainly the easiest way to create and edit content.

Don’t forget to hit the orange SAVE button to save all your changes.

Pro Tip

Download (Export) a backup of the webpage file you plan to edit before making any edits.

This way, if you make a mistake, you can simply upload (Import) the original file and restore the webpage.

Themify makes this easy to do.

Simply open the Themify Builder.

  1. Click the Export icon in the Builder’s toolbar. (This will export the webpage file to your computer.
  2. If you make a mistake, simply click the Import icon in the Builder’s toolbar and upload the file from your computer.

You can do this from both the front-end and the back-end.

When you’ve finished editing the page, delete the downloaded file on your computer—otherwise you’ll end up with multiple old files you don’t know what to do with.

Duplicating an Existing Post

When creating a new blog post, sometimes it’s helpful to duplicate an existing post if you you’d like to keep the same template and settings.

With the Themify Builder, this is super easy to do.

Simply open the Themify Builder and click the Duplicate icon.

A pop-up will appear asking whether you want to save the original webpage before duplicating. 

Click YES and the duplicate webpage will be created with the word “Copy” appended to the webpage Title and Permalink. 

You can now change the Title, Permalink, Featured Image and Body Content to your heart’s content.

Just one important thing to note

If you’re duplicating a live blog post, the duplicate will also display live. In other words, your blog archive will show the same blog post twice. Not great.

So, immediately head to the back-end and change the status of the webpage to Draft (instead of Published).

This will remove the duplicate from your blog archive. Now, you can use the template to create your new blog post.
