Three Doors to First-Page Bliss
The first way is, of course, via Google Adwords—those first two or three search results prefaced with the little green Ad square. Google Adwords is PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising, and while it can be effective in some industries, it can also work out on the dear side. As a rule-of-thumb, a budget upwards of $500 a month is the least spend required to make this work well. So, it’s not viable for many smaller businesses.
The second way is via Google My Business, those localised search results that appear alongside a map of your location. This is free of charge, but requires you registering with Google My Business, a process that includes submitting your business address. Those who work from home may need to weigh up the pros and cons of disclosing their home domicile. However, the power of this is that whenever a potential client in your locality searches for what you offer, you’ll be presented as an option. Yes, even if your website still requires a bit (or a lot) of work.
And finally, organic search. And herein lies the greatest returns for your hard-work efforts. With a well-structured website geared for SEO, your SEO-strong pages and blog posts can rank for multiple keywords beyond your immediate location … now, your city and region are within your reach.

Three Quick Easy-To-Action Tips
Tip #1 ~ Google Adwords
If you’re setting up a Google Adwords campaign, don’t forget to select Negative words along with the Keywords you choose.
A Negative keyword is a word or phrase you do NOT want triggering your advert. For example, if you’re a wedding photographer, you don’t want your advert triggered by someone looking for pet photography, for instance. Add the word pet and pets to your Negative keywords, and you won’t have people wanting cute photos with their cuddlies landing on your page and using up your daily budget.
Tip #2 ~ Google My Business
To get the most out of Google My Business, you need to submit your business address so that you appear in local search results. In setting up Google My Business, you will either have to locate your business address on the map Google provides or submit it. Once you’ve done so, and filled out all the information required, you’ll be sent a verification code to validate your address. This usually takes 1-2 weeks to receive. When you get it, verify your address and you’re done!
(You may be presented with three options: Store Front, Service Area or Brand. Only the first two require the submission of a business address, and only the first two allow you to show up in local search. In other words, if you select Brand, you will NOT cash in the benefit of appearing in local search. So unless you run a retail store front, select Service Area. (Note: Because Google changes things repeatedly, you may not be asked this question).
Tip #3 ~ Organic Search
Make sure your website is well-structured for SEO, or you’ll be climbing up a sheer rock face with a baby elephant strapped to your back. Then make sure you activate a blogging component as part of your website. Without fresh content (i.e. a regular blog post), you’ll be trying to carry the baby elephant and its entire herd.
